The Board of Directors oversees sustainability matters through the Board Sustainability Committee (BSC). The Senior Management Team (SMT) ensures that sustainability decisions and strategic direction align with NNPC's long-term strategy, direction, and business aspirations. Strategic implementation is driven by the Chief Strategy and Sustainability Officer (CSSO), while the Head, Sustainability oversees day-to-day integration of sustainability by liaising with managers at the Corporate Centre and sustainability functions across our service and business units.
The SIC is a crucial part of sustainability governance at NNPC. The council drives cross-functional collaboration, which is vital for effective sustainability implementation, and guides the allocation of adequate resources. It also ensures that sustainability-related initiatives and KPIs are communicated and effectively cascaded throughout our businesses.
Guiding Principles
Our guiding principles are the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG7 (to ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all); and our commitments to implementation of Nigeria’s Nationally Determined Contribution under the UNFCCC Paris Accord (reduce emissions by 20% unconditionally and 45% conditionally by 2030, end gas flaring by 2030 and ensure 30% energy efficiency by 2030).
Other principles underpinning our sustainability include the PIA Act which provides for NNPC Ltd to engage in renewable energy business; and the Nigerian Climate Act for mainstreaming climate change actions to achieve low emissions, inclusive green growth and sustainable economic development.
